Michael Canning appointed M&C Saatchi Australia ECD.

Globally renowned creative Michael Canning has been appointed M&C Saatchi Executive Creative Director of its 400-person Sydney office.

Over the past decade Michael has been widely recognised as one of the world’s foremost creative talents. With a career spanning Australia and the USA, he has earned a reputation for his leadership of content and new approaches to media that have a cultural impact for brands.

One of the most adept collectors of global awards going around, Michael’s 40 Cannes Lions include two Grand Prix for Media, two Agency of the Year titles and the inaugural Gold Lion for Branded Content and Entertainment. Other world-best accolades include the One Show Entertainment ‘Best of Show’ award in Los Angeles, the Clio Awards Hall of Fame, MTV Music Video nominations and Young Gun of the Decade. In 2015, Michael was invited to serve on the prestigious Cannes Lions Titanium and Integrated Jury.

A native of Sydney, he joins M&C Saatchi Australia after five years in the USA, most recently in Los Angeles as part of the creative leadership at 72andSunny, which Fast Company named in its top 50 most innovative companies of 2015.

Prior to 72andSunny, Michael worked with Leo Burnett in New York, focusing on the growth of key business for both Leo Burnett North America and Leo Burnett Worldwide. He was one of the global network’s youngest ECDs and member of the Global Product Board.

During his time stateside Michael worked with leading brands including the United Nations, FiLIP Technologies, Chobani, Kellogg’s, Target, General Mills, Samsung, Village Voice and Google, engaging consumers with work that made headlines in the likes of the New York Times, Forbes, Bloomberg Business, CES, Mashable, TechCrunch,

Fast-Co Create, CNN and USA Today.

At M&C Saatchi Australia Michael will oversee all brands and creative product at the Sydney office which is one of the region’s most awarded agencies, recently ranked No.2 agency in Asia Pacific in the Cannes Lions Global Creativity Report, with clients including bluechips Optus, Google, NRMA Insurance and Commbank.

He will reunite with former colleague Andy DiLallo who joined M&C Saatchi Australia as Chief Creative Officer earlier this year from Leo Burnett. Micahel will enable Andy to focus on the growth of both M&C Saatchi Sydney and Melbourne, as well as key pieces of business in the region. The appointment follows the recent move of previous M&C Saatchi Sydney ECD Ben Welsh to the role of Creative Chairman of Asia.
