M&C Saatchi has invested in Sesión Tequila, a three year old, Australian owned, premium tequila brand, to help refine the brand and drive its expansion into the US and China.

M&C Saatchi has invested in Sesión Tequila, a three year old, Australian owned, premium tequila brand, to help refine the brand and drive its expansion into the US and China.

The deal values Sesión at US$30 Million.

Founders, Jennifer Hawkins and Jake Wall created Sesión Tequila to share their love of high quality, sessionable tequila with their friends and change how the world thinks about tequila. They are working with a team that includes industry heavyweights Shane McKillen (former owner of 42 Below Vodka and South Gin) and Tim Freeburn.

Prior to launching, the team spent several years in planning and developing the premium drink alongside the Beckmann Family in Jalisco, Mexico (who have over eight generations of tequila making experience).

Tim Freeburn, co-owner said: “It takes time to make premium tequila this good. Sesión Tequila is the result of provenance, distilling and ingredient credentials so you can take your time to savour every sip. The recent boom in Tequila means there are more opportunities than ever to provide a modern and differentiated tequila offering to customers looking for something new.

“We’re excited to launch the evolution of Sesión with M&C Saatchi and to grow our current footprint across the USA and Asia.”

During its first year of launch, Sesión walked away from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition with one award for each of its three tequilas. The Sesión Mocha Tequila won a Gold Medal, while both the Sesión Blanco and Reposado won Silver Medals.

M&C Saatchi Group is currently working on a full rebrand for Sesión to better reflect the company’s ambition and unique position in the market. Sesión currently has distribution in Australia and the USA and the new brand will serve as a platform to increase distribution and consumption in Australia, USA and China starting early 2019.

M&C Saatchi has launched many alcohol brands across the network in its 20+ year history. The team will particularly be drawing on the experience of M&C Saatchi LA who played a pivotal role in the launch and eventual acquisitions of both Ketel One Vodka and George Clooney’s Casamigos Tequila.

While Sesión are refining the brand, it will retain the name and its three distinctive, award winning flavours: Blanco, Reposado and Mocha.

Sesión Blanco:​​ A refreshing way to start the evening. In a cocktail or on the rocks. “A creamy vegetal nose of green peppers and grass with a faint hint of green pineapple. On the palate; a robust mineral start finishing with a long light spiced finish with elements of white pepper.” – San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Sesión Reposado: ​​Our most sessionable, mellow tequila. “Aromas of butterscotch, green banana and gingerbread with touches of cooked agave. Vanilla and baked orchard fruits in the mouth with a long warm spiced finish.” – San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Sesión Mocha: ​​An exotic end to the night. On its own or in our Espresso Martini. “On the nose; chocolate fondant, biscuits, bread dough and dark roasted coffee with a roasted agave note. Dark chocolate, creamy mouth-feel and cold brew coffee on the palate with a sweet finish.” – San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
